FUNGUS WEEVIL Platystomos albinus

·         This uncommon and local Fungus Beetle Platystomos albinus as the name suggests has an association with dead wood where it feeds on fungi and it is therefore most likely to be found in habitats where fallen timber has been allowed to decay naturally. The markings are sufficiently distinctive to enable identification to species in the UK where there are several other members of the same Family (Anthribidae). The colours are cryptic and perhaps reminiscent of bird-droppings – a useful disguise if an insect doesn’t want to be eaten!
