The Bee Chafer Trichius fasciatus is one of several very similar bee-mimicking chafers to be found in Europe to which the same vernacular name may be applied. These photographs were taken in Norway where this insect appears to be reasonably common. However, the black and yellow warning colours are perhaps of greater importance when these beetles are viewed by predators than their superficial resemblance to bumble bees or indeed the buzzing noise that they make when in flight. The pronotum is furry in freshly emerged examples but the yellow hairs are worn away as these beetles age.
