CREAM-SPOT LADYBIRD Calvia quattuordecimguttata

·         The aphidophagous Cream-spot Ladybird Calvia quattuordecimguttata (or 14-guttata if your biro is running out of ink) is most likely to be confused with the mildew-feeding Orange Ladybird Halyzia sedecimguttata (an increasingly common species that will sometimes be attracted to lit windows at night – see: Beetles 20) but the ground colour is a warm chestnut-brown, the margins of the pronotum and the elytra of this medium-sized ladybird lack any translucency and there are fewer spots. Another potential confusion species is the Eighteen-spot Ladybird Myrrha octodecimguttata but this is usually restricted to the higher branches of Scots Pines Pinus sylvestris rather than the deciduous woodland habitats favoured by Cream-spot and Orange Ladybirds and therefore unlikely to be noticed unless one is deliberately searching for it. There is likely to be little overlapping in their habitats. The Cream-spot is one of the ‘conspicuous’ ladybirds, i.e. one of those large enough to be noticed by non-entomologists – and it isn’t red with black spots!
