FAIRY-RING
LONGHORN BEETLES Pseudovadonia livida
·
The
Fairy-ring Longhorn Beetle Pseudovadonia
livida is one of the commonest and most readily
encountered members of the family Cerambycidae in
the southern counties of the UK, where it may be observed feeding (and
indulging in other activities) on flowers. Exposure to pollen is accidental,
but it serves a useful purpose when a pollen-dusted beetle distributes it to
other flowers of the same species – entomophilous pollination. The origin of
the beetle’s vernacular name is related to an association with Marasmius oriades
mushrooms, as the females lay their eggs in humus where they grow, and the
fungal mycelium contributes to the larval diet.
