RED-HEADED CARDINAL BEETLE Pyrochroa serraticornis

·         The attractive Red-headed Cardinal Beetle Pyrochroa serraticornis is the most abundant member of the family Pyrochroidae in the UK, and it is most likely to be encountered on the margins of deciduous woodlands, so it is well worth examining the vegetation growing alongside woodland paths when searching for this species. These insects are very active on bright, sunny summer days, and they will fly readily. The beetle is easily distinguishable from its close relative, the Black-headed Cardinal Beetle P. coccinea for reasons that should require no further clarification!
