·         The Ruff Calidris pugnax has always been a source of fascination for bird-watchers because of the remarkably ornate plumage that the males of this (predominantly) passage migrant acquire during the breeding season although sadly the bird now only rarely breeds in the UK so unless a bird is still in full breeding plumage when observed during migration this finery is unlikely to be witnessed. The vernacular name in common usage strictly speaking only refers to the male birds as possibly uniquely amongst British birds the female has her own common name (‘Reeve’). The bird shown in these photographs over-wintered in Dorset and the (winter) plumage indicates that it is a ‘satellite’ male with white head-feathers. Further authoritative information from the British Trust for Ornithology about the extraordinary breeding behaviour of Ruffs (and Reeves!) may be obtained here: https://www.bto.org/about-birds/species-focus/ruff. These birds are variable in both size and the appearance of their plumage and they can therefore be quite difficult to identify.
