To the uninitiated the Willow
Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus is virtually
indistinguishable in appearance from the closely related Common
Chiffchaff P. collybita. However, the Chiffchaff
has a distinctive onomatopoeic song (actually “chaff-chiff”) as opposed to the
lilting, descending cadence of the Willow Warbler, a more cheerful (but
otherwise similar) contact-call, darker leg colour and the type of differences in
wing formula (relative feather length) that would require close examination to
separate. Therefore, the most immediate clincher is usually audible rather than
visual as the songs enable instant separation even if the bird itself cannot be
seen. Both these warblers are migratory, but Chiffchaffs may also be seen
increasingly during the winter months whereas the Willow Warbler is exclusively
a summer migrant.
