The
white ‘shoulders’ of the Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos
are the most distinctive field characteristics of an otherwise unprepossessing
little wader. It can be difficult to see on rocky shores or shingle despite the
bright white underparts. The bird’s presence is often betrayed by its call,
sounding rather like a rapidly blown thin, high-pitched staccato whistle
descending slightly in tone, and it is most likely to be encountered as a
summer migrant in the UK. All of the photographs apart from the first one were taken on the Isle of Mull.
