A fleet of low-emission hybrid
buses specially designed for the streets of London has been built by Wrightbus.
Designated ‘LT’ the first eight
examples were introduced in 2011 by Arriva on Route 38 and more recently
further new buses have been used on Routes 24 and 11 and many other central
London routes by other franchise-holders. Dubbed the ‘new Routemaster’, the
‘Borismaster’ or simply ‘New Bus for London’ (‘NB4L’) these stylish vehicles
are packed with innovative features including regenerative brakes. They have
three exits including an open rear platform (used during daylight hours), white
route indicator blinds and conductors (although these don’t actually sell
tickets). It remains to be seen whether they will capture the public
imagination in quite the same manner as earlier classic designs like the RT and
the Routemaster but every effort has been made to provide London with a highly
distinctive and potentially iconic replacement. Many have carried a wide
variety of advertising vinyls, adding additional colour to the Capital’s
streets. The first batch were originally registered with non-standard plates
(as per these photographs) but these have since been corrected as all now carry
the Irish ‘LTZ’ plates with the
fleet number plus 1,000 neatly matching one another – e.g. LT64 LTZ 1064. The photographer had an opportunity to sit in the
driving seat of this bus during an open day at Merton Garage in 2013.
