- The Cinquefoil Skipper
Pyrgus circii
is one of several very similarly marked members of the family Hesperidae
found in the South of France so the identification may be tricky – indeed
this one has needed to be amended after some years of doubt, having
recently discovered this first class reference material on line: http://www.european-butterflies.org.uk/downloads/Pyrgus%20guide_high.pdf. The markings on
the upper- and underside markings may be used to distinguish this
butterfly from the other Grizzled Skippers in the area but identification
to species may prove to be impossible from photographs and particularly
from those of worn specimens.
