- These
stunning male Violet
Dropwing Dragonflies Trithemis annulata
were photographed in Sommières
during the last day of a visit to the South of France. The violet colour
of the mature males is generated by the development of a powdery bluish 'pruinescence' over the bright red ground colour and
the wing veins are also a striking red making this insect highly
distinctive. It is difficult to do their vibrant and rather outrageous
colours justice in a photograph. This small dragonfly has recently
established breeding colonies in Mediterranean Europe following a natural
expansion from Northern Africa. Hopefully it might follow the example of
several other continental species by reaching the UK one day!
