The Pigmy Shrew Sorex minutus is the smallest British mammal. The bloodied nose of this individual has presumably been acquired during a fight with another member of the same species and these belligerent little creatures lead short, frenetic and highly active lives. Their high metabolism requires a regular supply of food (proven to have been equivalent to the animalís body-weight in a captive study*) so there will be multiple periods of hunting activity during each day interspersed with periods of rest.
