·         This photograph illustrates an interaction between a rather damp Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen (left) and a younger lactating vixen in early May. For several years it had been believed that the animal on the left had been a male – until a first litter of cubs was produced when she was four years old! The vixen on the right has produced two litters, the second of which was brought to the author’s garden. Foxes are very expressive animals and facial expressions, vocalisations and body-language are all used in their communications.
