·         These rather poor quality, heat haze-affected photographs of Egyptian Mongooses Herpestes ichneumon (and yes, the plural is correct) were taken by the Tagus Estuary in Portugal where there is a colony of these predominantly African mammals. There is fossil evidence suggesting that they are naturally occurring in Iberia but there may also have been artificial introductions a long time ago. Obtaining better photographs would have not been possible as they were seeking deep shade in extremely hot weather! With thanks to Bernardo Barreto: http://visitportugalbirdwatching.com/?tour-guide-bernardo-barreto,90 for locating them.
