The
Black-spotted Longhorn Beetle Rhagium mordax is most likely to be seen at the margins of
woodlands in early summer where it may be active on sunny days and attracted to
flowering Hawthorn Crataegus monogyna.
The larvae are saproxylic, feeding on rotting Oak Quercus spp.
and other decaying deciduous trees. This is one of the more widespread and
easily recognisable members of the Cerambycidae,
a large family with almost seventy British species.
