It
is not known if there is any biological purpose associated with the
pinkish-orange suffusion on the wings and tergites of the otherwise black and
very shiny Broad-shouldered Leaf Beetle Chrysolina
oricalcia as they are completely hidden at
all times other than when the beetle is in flight. Perhaps they are used as
flash coloration to deter predators. The elytra are strongly punctured in this
species. Some specimens are reported to reflect a bluish, bronze, or coppery
tint but this did not seem to apply to the example shown above.
