The
Bloody-nosed Beetle Timarcha tenebricosa is so called because of a tendency to
exude haemolymph from its mouthparts when under threat, as illustrated in the
final photograph. This protective device is presumably either designed to
frighten would-be predators or to indicate the distastefulness of this common
and slow-moving large leaf beetle and as it is flightless it cannot escape by
taking to the air. Falling from vegetation to the safety of the leaf-litter is
another defensive measure often used by beetles. These photographs were taken
in France.
