_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Beetles 41 – Larch Ladybirds
LARCH
LADYBIRD Aphidecta obliterata
·
The
author has never encountered a Larch Ladybird Aphidecta
obliterata in the wild, quite probably
because he is not in the habit of frequenting Larch Larix decidua
woodlands (these normally unspotted ladybirds frequent the upper branches of
Larch or other conifers), so the illustration above is of a captive specimen,
collected by Roger Hawkins prior to the publication for use on one of the
colour plates of his book ‘Ladybirds of Surrey’. The dark central
stripes along the inside margins of the elytra are usually present, and there
may also be some small brown spots present. Even when captive, ladybirds can
prove to be quite elusive and mobile in front of a lens! The photograph was
taken during pre-digital days. It was under-exposed and very dusty by the time
that the transparency was scanned, so the photograph has been painstakingly cleaned
up, and adjusted on a computer.
