- Longhorn (longicorn) beetles
usually possess extremely long antennae and their larvae typically feed on
wood, either dead or living, in which case they may pose an economic
threat to forestry. However, the attractively marked Golden-bloomed
Grey Longhorn Beetle Agapanthia villosoviridescens (the possessor of
impressively long vernacular and scientific names!) with its distinctive
pied antennae is an inhabitant of wetlands and the larvae live inside the
stems of thistles Cirsium spp. and other herbaceous plants
inhabiting the boundaries and clearings of woodlands, so their presence is
not a matter of any concern. This insect appears to have been spreading
its range in the UK recently and these examples were photographed at a
well recorded site in Surrey where the photographer had never seen them
before.
