_____________________________________________________________________________________________ Beetles 79 – Common Sun Beetles
COMMON
SUN BEETLE Amara aenea
·
The photographer was familiar with
fast-moving Common Sun Beetles Amara aenea long
before he had developed an interest in entomology, having been told that they
were “golden beetles” as a child. The bright, reflective golden colour does
indeed catch the sun, but irregular movements and rapidity certainly make
photographing them a challenge to photograph, and as they are found at ground
level personal dignity may need to be sacrificed to achieve this aim! As is so
often the case with ground beetles (Carabidae),
a large family containing well over 300 British representatives, there are
other similar species, but the conspicuous diurnal behaviour of this beetle,
often to be observed scuttling across pathways, normally assists with
identification.
