EYED LADYBIRD Anatis ocellata

·         The handsome Eyed Ladybird Anatis ocellata is the largest British ladybird. This beetle has a strong association with Scots Pine Pinus sylvestris or other coniferous trees and it is therefore worth looking for on the lower branches (because they can be reached!) where it may be found feeding on aphids – be warned, these insects can be very mobile and if surrounded by Pine needles not particularly easy to photograph either. As is so often the case with ladybirds the ground colour and the markings of this species are quite variable. The spots on the elytra may not always be surrounded by pale margins and in the example shown above these features are present but not very clearly defined.
