·         The Garganey Anas querquedula is predominantly a scarce passage migrant to the UK (there is also a small breeding population). The drake illustrated above was photographed at Lodmoor in Dorset. Most sightings will occur in spring when the birds are in full breeding plumage or in autumn when they may still retain eclipse plumage and therefore be more difficult to identify. Given their relative rarity in the UK it was of some interest to have been able to photograph the Garganey juxtaposed with a Lesser Yellowlegs Tringa flavipes (an uncommon transatlantic vagrant) - although rather frustratingly the Garganey was so absorbed in feeding that he wouldn’t raise his head!
