·         The photographs above illustrate ‘Dark-bellied’ Brent Geese Branta bernicla race bernicla (confusingly alluding to barnacles for reasons associated with folk lore as there is a separate species with this vernacular name) overwintering on the Norfolk coast, although the photographs were taken in April, so they wouldn’t have been present for much longer before returning to their Arctic breeding grounds. There are three principal races including bernicla, the others being ‘Pale-bellied’ race hrota, breeding in the Canadian Arctic, and the race overwintering in Ireland, arriving there from the northwest as opposed to the northeast, and Black Brant, a rare American vagrant belonging to the race nigricans. Coastal estuaries and marshes and nearby arable farmland regions are the places to look for these small, dark geese with contrasting white rumps. Hybrids and intermediate colour forms may occur, but technically all belong to a single species.
