- Eurasian Sparrowhawks Accipiter nisus and other top
of the food-chain raptors were particularly badly hit by the usage of the toxic
insecticide dichlorophenyltrichloroethane (DDT)
during the middle of the twentieth century. Fortunately, the numbers of
these stunning looking birds have now recovered to a healthy level
following the banning of this very damaging chemical. The consequences of
this sad episode ought to be a salutary lesson for us all and the
potentially deleterious effects of any chemicals intended for use in the
environment should be very rigorously examined prior to introducing their
use as it is easy to be wise after the event and usually impossible to
reverse the damage that may have been inflicted when we get it wrong!
