- The
Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus
is one of our most familiar species as large numbers are to be seen
inland during the winter months. The vernacular name is somewhat
misleading as the dark head markings are only present when the bird is in
full breeding plumage, being reduced to a small patch behind the eye in
winter - and they are dark brown rather than black!
