- The final few photographs
illustrate a partial life-history of the Firebug Pyrrhocoris
aptera. In the UK this RDB1 species is at the very edge of
its range and there are very few permanently established colonies in
mainland Britain. Most sites are temporary including one in Surrey where
the first photograph was taken and where the habitat requirements were met
as the flora includes include Lime Tilia sp. and Mallow
Malva sp. This strikingly marked bug is very common in continental
Europe and it has acquired the vernacular name of
‘Clown-faced Bug’ on Jersey – the origin becomes most evident when the
bugs are viewed head down, it clearly only applies to the adults and they
don’t look very cheerful!
