- One of these photographs shows a
cluster of at least 23 Parent
Bug Elasmucha
grisea nymphs sitting on a Birch Betula
sp. leaf. The juveniles are much more decoratively marked than the
adult bugs. As may be evident from this series of photographs the
vernacular name has been derived from the protective (parental) behaviour
of female Parent Bugs towards their eggs and offspring and these insects
are often to be seen in aggregations with more than one stage of the
life-history in evidence. The most likely confusion would be with the superficially
similar Birch Shieldbug Elasmosthesus
interstinctus (illustrated elsewhere on
this site) and both species may be found feeding on Birch.
