  BIRCH SHIELDBUG Elasmosthesus interstinctus

·         The Birch Shieldbug Elasmosthesus interstinctus resembles a scaled down version of the Hawthorn Shieldbug Acanthosoma haemorrhoidale but it is perhaps most likely to be confused with the Parent Bug Elasmucha grisea, a similar sized bug that also inhabits Birch Betula sp. trees. However, the rufous markings of the latter are less clearly defined and the Birch Shieldbug neither attends to its offspring nor clusters together in the same manner. As may be seen from the photographs this species may be found on plants other than Birch.
