Bugs 31 - Broad-headed Bugs
BROAD-HEADED BUG Alydus calceratus
·
This broad-headed bug Alydus calceratus (Alydidae) is the only member of
its family to be found in the UK. The adult is believed to mimic black and red spider-hunting
wasps belonging to the family Pompilidae (the dark wings reveal
an orange area on the abdomen when opened) although the physical resemblance is
superficial and this subterfuge perhaps has more to do with behaviour than
appearance. The early stages are reported to mimic ants. This photograph was
taken at a heathland site in Surrey.
