BUG Raglius
alboacuminatus
· Sadly, a population of the uncommon and rather local ground bug Raglius alboacuminatus that used to inhabit the photographer’s back garden was lost when a patio was replaced but there are known to be other colonies not too far away so it is possible that it might become established again. There is an association with Black Horehound Ballota nigra although so far as he is aware this plant was absent from the garden flora (although it is common in a nearby park) and for some reason (possibly warmth) the bug was most likely to have been seen scuttling across the surface of the original patio stones on sunny days and then disappearing between the cracks. Both brachypterous and fully winged forms are found and the final picture (poor quality as it has been scanned from an old transparency) shows the latter. Normally the subjects that appear on this site are un-restrained, but this bug is so fast moving on the ground that it is very difficult to capture in the centre of the frame so an opportunity was taken to photograph one in the hand.
