Butterflies 104 – Alpine Heaths

ALPINE HEATH
BUTTERFLY Coenonympha gardetta
·
This probable Alpine Heath Butterfly Coenonympha gardetta
was photographed at Vercorin, at high altitude in
the Swiss Alps – although identification is inconclusive as there may be
overlapping of geographical ranges and hybridisation with Darwin’s Heath C.
darwiniana can occur. The relative
arrangement of and colour of the eyespots on the hindwings and the shape of the
pale strip surrounding them are said to differ but these features are said to
be inconsistent within these species and the colours of the specimen shown may
have faded. Montane populations may be discrete and genetically isolated. Therefore,
these butterflies may or may not prove to be conspecific. One thing is certain,
these butterflies are closely related.
