- The
hindwing of the Weaver's
Fritillary (also known as the Violet Fritillary) Boloria dia (photographed
in southern France) has a characteristically angular apex (see first
photograph) when compared with that of the Small Pearl-Bordered Fritillary Boloria euphrosyne but this
feature is not unique, so careful examination will be required to conclusively
identify these species, or indeed most of the other small fritillaries. The
former butterfly is absent from the UK. These butterflies can be
notoriously difficult to identify with certainty. The markings may be
variable within a species, so good references written by experts will be
