There is little doubt that the
beautiful Adonis Blue Butterfly Polyommatus bellargus
is one of the most prized butterfly sightings in the UK. The bright blue
upper-wings of the male catch the sunlight when these butterflies fly and the
combination of this and the black and white chequered wing-margins will enable
all but the most worn of specimens to be easily identified. Identification of
females may be trickier, particularly if the butterflies share their habitat
(as is usually the case) with other blue butterflies. Aberrations of this
species are not particularly unusual. These may be associated with exposure to
extremes of temperature during development. The final illustration (copied from
a transparency) is of a female aberration ceronus
that was photographed in Northern Spain.
