The
photographs in this selection of Small Heath Butterflies Coenonympha
pamphilus were taken in the UK (the first
three images), France and Italy (the last two) and it will be apparent that
there is some degree of variation in the ground colour, the intensity of the
markings and the size and number of ocelli. Southern European specimens appear
to be brighter (and perhaps more cooperative in front of the camera) than their
rather skittish British counterparts. These butterflies settle with their wings
closed so their rather drab uppersides will only
normally be visible when the butterflies are in flight.
