studies suggest that members of the genus Erebia
(collectively known as ‘Ringlets’) are currently undergoing very active
evolution and there are many similarly marked and therefore confusing
species in Continental Europe. In the UK the Scotch Argus Erebia aethiops is a northern
specialist and it is quite common in the Scottish Highlands (where the
first photograph was taken) and the Lake District. It is also easier to
identify at these locations as there are no other similarly marked
butterflies of the same size. The remainder of the photographs were taken
in Switzerland.
