·         These illustrations show the British subspecies Papilio machaon britannica (first photograph) and the European type species of the Common Swallowtail P. m. machaon respectively. The type species was photographed in the south of France. Any structural differences between the two are so subtle that they would require examination under a lens. As a rule of thumb, the British subspecies is confined to the fenlands of East Anglia but it is sometimes possible to encounter immigrant continental butterflies in the UK.
