female Tree
Grayling Butterfly Neohipparchia statilinus
was attracted to a nectarine that had been placed on a path. One of the
butterfly's warning eye-spots are evident in this photograph and the pair
of white spots just underneath the visible eyespot on the forewing in the
first and final photographs seem to be limited to just this species in the
geographical area in which it was found. The identification of similarly
marked Graylings to species can be tricky!
