· The Scarce Swallowtail Butterfly Iphiclides podalinus has been a victim of inappropriate nomenclature as the species is in fact common and widespread throughout much of continental Europe. The historically applied vernacular name is therefore very misleading! These French examples were seen feeding on Lavender Lavandula sp. and Water Mint Mentha aquatica, both highly scented and rich sources of nectar. These butterflies rarely remain in perfect condition for long and their tails are often missing.
