·         The Silver-washed Fritillary Argynnis paphia is the most readily encountered of the three large fritillaries native to the UK, showing a clear preference for woodland habitats. The black sex-branding on the forewings of the males is distinctive. A proportion of females may be of the rare dark form valezina (or valesina depending on the reference source used) and this aberration may be seen occasionally in the UK during hot summers. However, the individual of this form shown above was photographed in Switzerland. The remaining images of this widely distributed species were obtained in the UK and Switzerland.

·         David’s short films of Silver-washed Fritillary var. valezina females may be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU7CtMoqOyk&list=PL4AirIEc0NofhDbxohAG_PoMc7P2iGR5N&index=39&t=0s and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwHJ8GkvcVk&list=PL4AirIEc0NofhDbxohAG_PoMc7P2iGR5N&index=35&t=0s.
