The Sooty Copper Butterfly Lycaena tityrus is unusual as the attractive females are generally
more brightly marked than the males. There is significant variation in the
extent of the orange markings associated with the time of the year during which
the adults of this bi- or polyvoltine (depending on the local climate and
altitude) species emerge – so hopefully the genders have been given correctly –
the wings of the males are more angular and less rounded than those of the
females. The photographs were taken during the months of July and August in
France or Italy. This butterfly is absent from the British Isles,
but it may be found on the other side of the English Channel in Northern
France.
