DRYAD Minois

·
These male Dryad Butterflies Minois
dryas were photographed in France where it has a local distribution.
The twin blue-pupilled spots on the forewings of this
sexually dimorphic butterfly are prominent field characteristics if the insect
can be observed clearly with the forewings raised (so ideally when settled)
although confusion may be possible with the Great Sooty Satyr Satyrus ferula (illustrated
elsewhere on this web site) in those areas of southern Europe where the ranges
of these species overlap. Without these markings this butterfly would be very
drab indeed! The first image has been scanned from a transparency. The second
photograph was taken over 20 years later – only the second opportunity that the
photographer has recorded this butterfly. A photophobic individual that refused
to settle in direct sunlight! This behaviour may, of course, be typical for
this insect.
