The Map Butterfly Araschnia levana has
two generations each year, levana in
spring and prorsa in summer (see
photographs). These have very different markings with more extensive orange
markings on levana. The photographer has not
yet managed to visit continental Europe at the right time of the year to have
seen the spring brood, but he is untroubled by this omission as prorsa butterflies are very attractive insects. This
species is absent from the UK although there have been (failed) attempts to
artificially introduce it. The eggs had been deposited on Stinging
Nettle Urtica dioica. These photographs were taken in the South of
France.
