·         These photographs of a female Apollo Butterfly Parnassius apollo were taken at altitude in the Vallée d'Ossau in the French Pyrénées where she was the only member of her species visible on a not particularly sunny day. Note the missing scales on the forewing-margins and that the orange and black markings of the hindwings may be seen through the semi-translucent forewings. These large, slow-flying butterflies are restricted to high mountain ranges in Europe and because of their degree of specialisation they are threatened by anthropogenic climate change.
