The Speckled Wood Butterfly Pararge
aegeria is one of the most familiar Satyrid (Brown) butterflies to be found in Great
Britain and Continental Europe. The Continental type species P. aegeria aegeria possesses
orange markings on the uppersides of their predominantly
dark brown wings, whereas those of the British subspecies P. a. tircis are a creamy-yellow colour. There is some natural
variation and darker specimens are occasionally encountered that may have originated
from across the English Channel. The Speckled Wood is often one of the first adult
British butterflies to emerge in the spring (as distinct from those that have hibernated
in the imagine state) and it is also one of the last to disappear in the
autumn. Unusually this insect can hibernate as either a larva or a pupa
and it is the latter that will emerge early. There are three broods each year
with some overlapping, meaning that this butterfly may be found throughout the
spring and summer months and well into the autumn. However, the adults are
relatively short-lived, and they cannot hibernate.
