·         The Ringlet Butterfly Aphantopus hyperantus is a familiar woodland species in the UK. Identification should not pose any difficulties (although fresh male Meadow Brown Butterflies Maniola jurtina may also appear to be dark when seen in flight) as the markings are unique amongst British and European butterflies. The size and shape of the eyespots is subject to some variation, and they are more conspicuous in females. The ground colour is paler in females and brighter in some Continental populations. Note that there are numerous Brown butterfly species in Europe, many of which are known as ‘Ringlets’ so good quality reference material will be required to be able to accurately identify them. However, as a point of reference for British butterfly enthusiasts, most of these more closely resemble the Scotch Argus Butterfly as they belong to the large and confusing Erebia genus. The above photographs were taken in London and Switzerland.
