The Grayling Butterfly Hipparchia
semele is a heathland species, relying on the
beautifully intricate cryptic camouflage markings on its underside to
‘disappear’ when it settles on the ground or on low vegetation, a subterfuge
further enhanced by tilting in order to minimise the area of shadow cast by its
wings. In the UK there are no similar species but in Continental Europe there
are many to confuse the observer!
