MARBLED WHITE BUTTERFLY Melanargia galathea

·         Despite the inference of the vernacular name, the Marbled White Butterfly Melanargia galathea is a ‘Brown’ belonging to the large family Satyridae and there is evidence of ongoing range-expansion of these handsome insects in the UK from the Southern counties. This distinctive species is associated with grassland and flower meadows and the butterflies are often to be observed feeding on Knapweeds Centaurea spp., Scabious Knautia spp. and other brightly coloured members of the Compositae, often providing extremely photogenic combinations when they do. There are no confusion species in the UK, but several other Marbled Whites inhabit Europe, particularly the Mediterranean countries, and in some cases their ranges may overlap, particularly in Iberia where there may be some hybridisation. Their common names (bar Esper’s M. russiae) are prefixed by the geographical region in which they occur.
