GRIZZLED SKIPPER BUTTERFLY Pyrgus malvae

·         The Grizzled Skipper Butterfly Pyrgus malvae is small, fast flying, dark and inconspicuous, so it will pay to watch one of these charming little insects in flight (not always easy!) to see where it lands so that the distinctive markings may be seen clearly. A good test of field skills! Fortunately, for British butterfly enthusiasts it is the only native Skipper species with a dark brown ground colour and white spots so identification will be straightforward. It is restricted to the southern half of the British Isles and the population has been steadily declining as suitable habitat has been lost – in common with many other invertebrates. Many colonies are small, scattered, and isolated and the insects are rarely to be seen in large numbers even at sites where there are well established populations. Chalk and limestone substrates are favoured. This butterfly is on the wing in early May and there may be a partial second brood in late summer if conditions are favourable. In Continental Europe there are several similar species so the markings of their upper- and undersides will need to be examined in detail to conclusively identify them.
