Butterflies 95 – Lulworth Skippers
LULWORTH SKIPPER BUTTERFLY Thymelicus
acteon (f)
·
The Lulworth Skipper Butterfly Thymelicus acteon has
a limited range in the UK, being restricted to warm clifftops on the Dorset
coast where it may be locally common. This species is far more widely
distributed on the Continent. It is rather an undistinguished little butterfly,
but the females possess ‘C’-shaped collection of scale patches on their
forewings (see photograph) that are brighter and paler than the ground colour,
and their presence will enable separation from other small ‘golden’ Skippers. Males
may not be so easy to tell apart, particularly if worn. The above photograph
has been scanned from an old transparency.
