Oberthür’s Grizzled Skipper Butterfly Pyrgus
armoricanus is a locally distributed, Southern European
species, and one of several small, fast-flying, and similar looking butterflies
that may be difficult to identify in the field, or retrospectively without the
aid of sharp photographs. Under ideal circumstances images should be taken of both
the upperside and underside, but it will surprise no
entomologists that on this occasion the butterfly didn’t co-operate! Therefore,
it was necessary to use reference material for comparison of the upperside markings. Some of the individual spots may differ
sufficiently from those seen in other Pyrgus
species to identify a butterfly, but often it will be necessary to compare all
the markings, and to make allowances for their variations. Fortunately, there
is now an excellent on-line resource for the identification of European ‘Grizzled’
Skippers available here: http://www.european-butterflies.org.uk/downloads/Pyrgus%20guide_high.pdf . As the markings of these butterflies may be
variable in size, shape, and intensity, unequivocal identifications may not always
be possible, particularly in geographical areas where similar species are known
to overlap. Identification of badly worn specimens may sometimes be an impossible
task.
